How to check your phone

iPhone

On an iPhone

Works on any recent iPhone.

  1. Open Settings, tap General, then About.
  2. Scroll down to Carrier Lock. On some iPhones it is called Network Provider Lock.
  3. Read what it says. That one line is your answer.

"No SIM restrictions" means your iPhone is unlocked and ready for any carrier.

A carrier's name means it is locked to that carrier. The fix is below, and it is free.

Android

On an Android

Menus vary a little by brand, so here are three ways, from quickest to most certain.

  1. Check Settings. On a Samsung, open Settings, tap Connections, then More connection settings, and look for Network unlock. On a Pixel and most other phones, open Settings and search for "SIM status" or "SIM lock". Wording like Unlocked or No SIM restrictions means you are good. Your carrier's name or a locked status means it is not.
  2. Try the sure test. Borrow a SIM card from a friend on a different carrier and pop it in. If the phone gets service and can make a call, it is unlocked. If it asks for an unlock code or shows a SIM error, it is locked.
  3. Or just ask. Your carrier can see your phone's lock status on your account and tell you in one call. Many carrier apps show it too.

Cannot find any lock setting? That is normal, plenty of Android models simply do not show one. Skip to the SIM test or the carrier call, either one settles it.

Check the phone is paid off

Carriers keep a phone locked while money is still owed on it. If you are financing it, the balance usually has to be paid before they will unlock.

Ask your carrier to unlock it

Call them or use their app and say "I want to unlock my phone." It is free, and every major carrier does it once your phone is eligible. Never pay a third party website to do this.

Give it a moment, then restart

Some unlocks happen instantly, others take a day or two to process. Restart your phone afterward, then run the check above again to confirm.

What does unlocked actually mean?
An unlocked phone is not tied to any one carrier, so it can be activated on any compatible network. A locked phone refuses service from other carriers until the carrier that sold it removes the lock.

Why was my phone locked in the first place?
Carriers lock phones they sell on payment plans or at a discount, to make sure the phone stays on their network until it is paid for. Phones bought outright from Apple, Google, or a retailer as "unlocked" were never locked at all.

Does unlocking cost anything?
No. Your carrier unlocks eligible phones for free. Be wary of websites that charge for "unlock codes"; at best they charge you for something your carrier does for nothing, and at worst they are scams.

Will unlocking erase my photos or apps?
No. Unlocking happens on the carrier's side and does not touch your data. Your photos, apps, and messages all stay exactly where they are. At most you will restart the phone once.

My phone is unlocked. What do I need to switch to Ombee?
